Common Bean inoculant program (Phaseolus vulgaris)
The single largest pulse crop (dry beans are about a third of global pulse production) and a daily protein staple across Latin America and Africa.
The challenge
Common bean is the weakest nitrogen-fixer among the major grain legumes: it often under-nodulates and leans on fertilizer, and it responds most where native rhizobia are scarce or poorly matched.
33% — of the world’s pulse output is common bean — the largest pulse crop, and yet the weakest nitrogen-fixer of the major grain legumes.
The world’s biggest pulse
Dry beans make up roughly a third of global pulse production and are a daily source of protein across Latin America and Africa — a staple in the truest sense.
The weakest fixer of the major legumes
Among the major grain legumes, common bean nodulates and fixes the least. Left to itself it under-performs and leans on fertilizer, capturing only a fraction of the nitrogen it could.
It responds most where rhizobia are scarce
The gains are largest on low-nitrogen soils with few or poorly-matched native rhizobia — exactly the fields where a robust, well-matched strain does the most work.
The program
- Nodu™ CB — establishes an efficient Rhizobium–bean symbiosis
- Vigor™ — builds roots, nutrient uptake, and stress tolerance
- Orvan™ — couples that fixation with rhizosphere biocontrol
Field-proven
Across 62 sites in 6 provinces (Yunnan, Heilongjiang, Inner Mongolia; 2021–2024): +14.2% average yield, up to 4.6× more nodules, nitrogenase up to 5.0×, and up to 60 kg N/ha fixed, with the strongest response on low-nitrogen soils where native rhizobia are scarce.
Rhizobial fit
Common bean is nodulated by fast-growing Rhizobium and is our most mature rhizobial line. Nodu™ CB is built on Rhizobium tropici (CIAT 899-type), valued for its acid-, heat-, and aluminium-tolerance and exceptional field stability, alongside R. etli / phaseoli. Because bean is a weak, often ineffective fixer, a robust, well-matched strain matters most; Orvan™ amplifies it.
By product
- Orvan™ (Orvan™ Bean): +14.2% yield, up to 4.6× more nodules; 62 sites / 6 provinces. Nitrogen-fixation potentiation.
- Nodu™ (Nodu™ CB, Rhizobium tropici / etli / phaseoli): +8.4% · 26 sites; Up to 60 kg N/ha, biggest response where native rhizobia are scarce.
- Vigor™ (PGPR): +8.3% · 22 sites.
How to use
At sowing: Nodu™ CB 3–5 g/kg seed; Orvan™ Seed/Coat or Flow in-furrow.
