Troubleshooting poor nodulation: a field diagnostic

You dug up a legume and found few nodules — or nodules that aren’t fixing. This is a step-by-step guide to reading the symptoms, finding the cause, and fixing it next time.

The quickest way to know whether nitrogen fixation is working is to dig up a plant and read its nodules. If what you find is disappointing — few nodules, or nodules that are pale inside — the next job is to work out why. Poor nodulation almost always traces to one of a short list of causes, and most of them are preventable.

First, read what you found

The symptom narrows the cause. Few or no nodules points to a missing or dead partner, or to conditions that suppressed nodule formation. Plenty of nodules but pale, greyish-green or white inside points to nodules that formed but are not fixing — often the wrong or an ineffective strain, or a plant under stress. Active nodules are pink to red inside.

A worked example: “I inoculated, but the nodules are few and pale”

Suppose you inoculated soybean, yet at flowering you find only a handful of small, white-centred nodules. Work the checklist. Was the seed fungicide-treated, the inoculant applied on top of it, and the seed then left overnight before sowing? That contact would have killed most of the bacteria. Was the bag last season’s, or stored in a hot shed? Fewer live cells to begin with. Did the field get a heavy dose of starter nitrogen? That alone throttles nodulation. Any one of these explains the result — and each points to a specific change next season: switch to a granular in-furrow form away from the coating, use fresh product kept cool, sow promptly, and cut the starter nitrogen. The plant is telling you exactly where the process broke.

The usual culprits, in order

The partner never arrived — or didn’t survive

On new ground the commonest cause is simply that the right rhizobia were never there and the crop wasn’t inoculated — most likely on specific hosts like soybean and alfalfa. The next commonest is that inoculant was applied but killed before it reached the root: heat, direct sun, drying out, an aggressive fungicide seed coating, or too long between treating and sowing.

The soil said no

Several soil conditions suppress nodulation even when the right rhizobia are present. High soil nitrate — often from heavy starter nitrogen — tells the plant it doesn’t need to fix, and nodulation is throttled back. Low pH and aluminium toxicity hit both plant and rhizobium, especially in alfalfa. Waterlogging starves nodules of oxygen; severe drought and salinity stress both partners. Deficiencies of molybdenum — the nitrogen-fixing enzyme’s cofactor — or cobalt can also limit fixation.

The short checklist: was the right strain applied and kept alive? Is soil nitrate low enough to let the plant fix? Is pH high enough? Is the root zone neither waterlogged nor parched? Most nodulation failures are one of these — and all are fixable next season.

Fixing it

Within a season there is little to do once nodulation has failed except keep the crop nourished; the real fix is prevention. Match the crop-specific strain, keep the inoculant cool and apply it into moist soil close to sowing, avoid heavy starter nitrogen, and correct pH and drainage before you plant. Then leave a check strip next season to confirm the fix worked.
